The Long Island Trauma Recovery Network (LI TRN) is composed of well-trained EMDR psychotherapists who provide a specialized, brief therapy designed to help individuals, both civilians and first responders, suffering from acute stress conditions or post-traumatic stress disorders following a community disaster. This could include a natural disaster, such as a hurricane or flood, or an act of violence, such as a terrorist act. The method of treatment offered is called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). In many cases, EMDR can resolve an acute stress disorder immediately following a crisis and prevent the future development of post-traumatic stress. EMDR has been well researched for over twenty years and has been endorsed as an effective treatment for trauma by The World Health Organization, The American Psychiatric Association and the Bureau of Veterans Affairs.
The Long Island Trauma Recovery Network was formed in 2010 and is part of the National Trauma Recovery EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs (a 5013c organization).
Our network is connected to a larger organization, the Humanitarian Assistance Program (HAP) based in New Haven, Connecticut. HAP operates nationally and internationally, training, teaching and sending mental health clinicians into areas of need following disasters.
Our Long Island team will provide: assessments, up to five therapy sessions, free of charge (pro bono), and follow-up referrals as needed. The treatment is completely confidential. We do not duplicate or compete with other organizations in the community that already provide early responses. Rather, we aim to work collaboratively, offering a different, yet compatible service.
